Letting Editors Win - Who Needs More Than 1 Column?
In the years that I have been a front-end developer and site builder in Drupal, one thing has remained constant—the battle to allow editors more power without sacrificing design or performance. With Drupal 8 Layout Builder and Paragraphs, I finally have a solution that provides a good balance between flexibility and control. The best thing is that it all happens in a single column.
From my start with the Drupal 7 Context module, through Display Suite, Panelizer and Paragraphs to Drupal 8.5.5 Layout Builder, you'll hear about the different strategies I have explored to bring power to the people.
In this Session you will get an overview of my journey through layout building, how easy it is to make the transition to Layout Builder and how to make it limited to only the entities you want to use it on. You will learn how to leverage Paragraphs with a small amount of custom code to allow editors (and yourself as the site builder) to build a complex page with different sections, background options and interior columns—all using the Layout Builder single column layout. You will also learn how a little bit of admin theming through a bare-bones custom module will go a long way in giving your editors some helpful eye candy.
Key takeaways:
- Learning the differences and power of some layout options in Drupal 8 and what may be right for you.
- How you can make a Paragraphs into a supremely powerful editorial and site building tool.
- Not all options you can give the editor are helpful, useful or maintainable.
