Mariya Mego Vela

My name is Mariya Mego Vela. I went to college in NYC initially to receive a Film degree. Working on that degree gave an outlet to my creativity, but I still felt a tug towards the sciences. I changed my path towards working on an Environmental Studies degree with a focus on Geology. It was an invaluable experience. I helped contribute to a paper on microfossils, received a Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation scholarship, which is funded by the NSF, and I participated in the Geography Club, as a treasurer and then as president, as well as the College Association.

There was still something missing, but before I could explore, my family had a crisis. Suddenly there was no more financial support from them and the environment at home became toxic. I took a loan out, but it was not enough and eventually just as I had a few credits left to complete, I had to leave school and work full time.

I never had a doubt about returning to complete my education.  I worked for a few years in pet care and explored my interests. This was also absolutely invaluable experience. I learned a lot about working as an individual and making independent choices while also being a team member and helping my teammates out. I learned how to be a leader.

Eventually I was able to put 2 and 2 together. I realized that I could combine critical thinking skills and my affinity towards the sciences with a creative outlet.  There it was, the answer to my search for a viable career. I started learning JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. My brain felt hungry for more information. I practiced writing coding algorithms, watched videos, tutorials, and read books. Finally, I was accepted in a 24 week web development immersive course. No, it was not college. But I thought why not give this experience a try. It was quite successful and I graduated at the top of my class.

Now I'm on the search for the best use of my newly acquired knowledge. I am seeking to use what I know to help those that are in need.

Thank you for reading this.
